Royal Assent formally granted to Restoration and Renewal Bill after Supreme Court judgement delay
Royal Assent on the Parliamentary Buildings (Restoration and Renewal) Bill was granted on Tuesday 8 October.
Following the Supreme Court judgement on Tuesday 24 September that prorogation was unlawful, the process for granting Royal Assent to the Bill had to be initiated once more.
On Tuesday evening Royal Assent to the Bill was notified as part of the prorogation ceremony, and the Parliamentary Buildings (Restoration and Renewal) Act 2019 formally passed into law. The Act establishes the bodies that will have overall responsibility for the R&R Programme.
The Bill was thought to have been granted Royal Assent as part of the prorogation ceremony on 10 September, and to have become law on that date.
However, prorogation was declared null and void by the Supreme Court, so steps had to be taken by the parliamentary authorities and Government to notify royal assent again.
